2006-02-26

We are thrilled to highlight our USA EAT FIT sponsor: Success Rice (www.successrice.com).

We are particularly impressed with the Success Brown Rice product and have found it to be the perfect addition to many EAT FIT meals. Our latest favorite snack: Cook 2 servings of brown rice and 1 can of black beans in separate pans. Mix together and keep in the refrigerator for the perfect snack. When you're ready to eat, add a sprinkle of cheese, a dollop of fat free sour cream and a bit of salsa for an extra kick.

Feeling lethargic? We can help...

2006-02-18

Since our focus this week is on energy, we thought we would report to you that you are not alone! Many of us seem to live stuck in the world of busy, busy. We are constantly running here, running there, running everywhere.

Here are some tips modified from an article written by Colette Bouchez and Cynthia Haines, MD that will help you to regain some of that much needed energy.

Top 10 Energy Boosters

1. Increase Your Magnesium Intake (almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, fish)

2. Walk Around the Block (5-20 minute sessions as often as you can)

3. Take a Power Nap (15 minutes should rev you up.)

4. Don't Skip Breakfast -- or Any Other Meal

5. Reduce Stress and Deal With Anger (Get it "off your chest.")

6. Drink More Water and Less Alcohol

7. Eat More Whole Grains and Less Sugar (This will reduce cravings.)

8. Have a Power Snack (check out our favorites in the Weekly Feature)

9. Make It a Skinny Latte (to add calcium and protein to your morning java)

10. Check your Thyroid and Red Blood Count (if you still have chronic fatigue)

Trans Fats

2006-02-05

It's the sinister ingredient often overlooked in a quick scan of food labels. Trans fats may add that extra crunch to crispy foods, but they also raise your bad cholesterol.

Now, health officials plan to expose "hidden" trans fats in your favorite foods.

Until this month, consumers had to seek out words like "partially hydrogenated" to uncover the unhealthy ingredient, but under the new rule, food manufacturers must disclose the amount of trans fats in their products. A quick glance at the nutrition facts panel will reveal trans fat content right below saturated fat -- unless the product has less than 0.5 grams per serving.

What Makes Them So Bad?

Trans fats are formed when hydrogen is added to a vegetable oil, converting it from a liquid fat to a solid, more shelf-stable fat (think margarine). The process allows greater functionality in foods, making crunchy foods crispier and creamy foods smoother. Commonly found in processed foods like cookies, crackers, baked goods and the like, these fats raise harmful LDL cholesterol levels. The result: an increased risk for heart disease.

Seemingly healthful foods, like granola bars and cereals, may also contain trans fats, surprisingly. Plus, they're a natural component of some high-fat meat and dairy products. Health officials say that making consumers aware of the damaging ingredient could prevent up to 1,200 cases of coronary heart disease and save between 250 and 500 lives over the next three years.

How to Lighten Your Load

The American Heart Association recommends restricting total fat intake to no more than eight teaspoons per day. And while there's no recommended dietary allowance for trans fats, experts claim intake should be limited. The best way to lighten your fat load: rely on whole foods, lean meats, fruits and vegetables. And when you need some fat to make foods more palatable, stick to oils like olive, canola and peanut rather than saturated and trans-fat laden butter or margarine.

Super Bowl brings some Not So Super Food Choices!

2006-01-29

Nubella News tells us that while the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers tackle each other in Detroit Feb. 3 to see who can get to the end zone first, millions of people will tackle each other in homes throughout the country to see who can make a bee line to the cheese dip first.

In fact, the Calorie Control Council and Snack Food Association say that on Super Bowl Sunday, Americans will devour 30 million pounds of snacks, equal to more than 1,200 calories and 50 grams of fat. And that doesn't count the food they'll eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner that day.

Now here are two startling facts: football watchers will scarf enough potato chips to equal 27 billion calories and 1.8 billion fat grams, the latter equal to 4 million pounds of fat or the weight of 13,000 NFL offensive linemen.

Council leaders and other nutritionists mete out this advice for people planning their Super Bowl events:

  • Include no-fat and low-fat chips and dips. Choosing fat-free potato chips will save up to 300 calories per person. Fat-free chips will slash 14 billion calories and 1.8 billion fat grams.
  • Offer meatless chili or lean chicken strips as entrees.
  • Offer angel food cake topped with low-fat frozen yogurt and chocolate syrup during the fourth quarter, the American Dietetic Association suggests.
  • Use dips that include salsa, which is fat-free, or reduced-fat sour cream, little mayonnaise or trying non-fat yogurt.
  • Use fresh herbs, spices, parsley, cilantro and hot pepper sauce to spice up the offerings.
  • Spread out lots of veggies for munching during the game.
  • Plan a "pre-Super Bowl workout" of walking, running, biking or another form of exercise. You know those 1,200 calories most folks will consume on Super Bowl Sunday? They'll need to walk four hours or run nearly two hours to burn it all off.
  • For some ideas on cutting the fat and calories on Super Bowl Sunday, visit http://www.caloriecontrol.org/diprecipes.html.

    Happy 2006!

    2006-01-01

40 to 45% of American adult make one or more resolutions each year. Among the top new years resolutions are resolutions about weight loss, exercise, and stopping to smoke.

The following shows how many of these resolutions are maintained as time goes on: - past the first week: 75%

    - past 2 weeks: 71%

    - after one month: 64%

    - after 6 months: 46%

While a lot of people who make new years resolutions do break them, research shows that making resolutions is useful. People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don't explicitly make resolutions. And people who make resolutions and have a partner, coach or team to help them with keep their resolutions are often the most successful.

Start the new year off right by making a healthy new year's resolution. We'd love to help you hit your goal.
